The Opportunity

We are recruiting on behalf of an exciting and growing client within the power and energy sector, who are looking to strengthen their commissioning team with the appointment of Junior, Senior, and Lead HV Commissioning Engineers.

This is an excellent opportunity to work on a variety of high-profile power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, and industrial infrastructure projects across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Commissioning of HV electrical systems and equipment.
  • Testing and energisation of substations, switchgear, transformers, protection and control systems.
  • Functional testing of protection relays and associated control systems.
  • Reviewing and implementing commissioning procedures and test documentation.
  • Fault finding and troubleshooting during commissioning activities.
  • Supporting site acceptance testing (SAT) and project handovers.
  • Ensuring all commissioning activities comply with safety and quality requirements.
  • Working closely with clients, project managers, engineers, and subcontractors.
  • Producing commissioning reports and technical documentation.

Additional Responsibilities (Senior & Lead Engineers)

  • Managing commissioning programmes and site activities.
  • Leading commissioning teams on major power and infrastructure projects.
  • Acting as the primary client interface during commissioning phases.
  • Coordinating multi-disciplinary commissioning activities.
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  • Supporting project planning, risk assessments, and project delivery.

Requirements

Junior HV Commissioning Engineer

  • Degree, HNC/HND or time-served apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering.
  • Understanding of power systems and electrical distribution.
  • Willingness to travel and work on site.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

Senior HV Commissioning Engineer

  • Proven experience commissioning HV electrical systems.
  • Experience with substations, transformers, switchgear, and protection schemes.
  • Strong understanding of commissioning methodologies and safety procedures.
  • Ability to lead commissioning activities independently.

Lead HV Commissioning Engineer

  • Significant experience delivering HV commissioning projects.
  • Experience managing commissioning teams and client relationships.
  • Ability to oversee multiple commissioning activities and complex project programmes.
  • Strong leadership, planning, and technical decision-making capabilities.

Desirable Experience

  • National Grid, DNO, ICP, renewable energy, power generation, or industrial project experience.
  • Protection relay testing experience (SEL, Siemens, ABB/Hitachi, GE, Schneider, etc.).
  • Experience working on systems from 11kV to 400kV.
  • Authorised Person (AP) or Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status.
  • Knowledge of IEC, BS EN and Grid Code requirements.
  • Previous substation commissioning experience.
