Location: Stockton-on-Tees
Pay Rate: £12.96 – £14.72 per hour + shift allowance
Shifts: Rotating Days & Backs (with occasional nights)

Central Employment are recruiting on behalf of our client, a well-established company within the steel manufacturing sector, for a Fettling Operative to join their production team.

This is a hands-on role suited to someone with experience in heavy manufacturing or fabrication environments, with a strong focus on quality and finishing standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Following part set-up sheets and customer work schedules
  • Using hand tools such as grinders and burning equipment to dress and finish heavy-duty steel components
  • Completing daily operation checks, TPM (Total Preventative/Production Maintenance) and pre-operation check sheets
  • Working from engineering drawings to complete tasks accurately
  • Inspecting parts to ensure quality standards are met, including completing first-off checks
  • Ensuring all equipment is maintained and in a safe working condition
  • Carrying out other ad hoc duties as requested by your line manager (within the scope of your skills and capabilities)

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Previous experience within a steel, fabrication or heavy manufacturing environment is desirable
  • Experience using grinders, burning gear or similar fettling equipment
  • Ability to read and follow engineering drawings is beneficial
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality finishing standards
  • Good understanding of health & safety within an industrial setting
  • Reliable and able to work effectively as part of a team

Shift Pattern:

  • Rotating shifts:
    • Days: 6:00am – 2:15pm (Monday to Thursday), 6:00am – 12:45pm (Friday)
    • Backs: 2:15pm – 10:30pm (Monday to Thursday), 12:45pm – 7:00pm (Friday)

Full flexibility around shift patterns is essential. Night shifts may be required on an as-and-when-needed basis to support business demands.


Rates, Overtime & Benefits:

  • £12.96 – £14.72 per hour (depending on experience)
  • Back Shift: 15% uplift on basic hourly rate
  • Night Shift: 25% uplift on basic hourly rate

Overtime Rates:

  • Monday to Friday:
    • First additional hour worked each day: basic hourly rate
    • Thereafter: x1.5
  • Saturday:
    • x1.5 for all hours worked
  • Sunday:
    • x2 for all hours worked
