Crane Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Bias)

Salary: £44,000 + OT 1.5x Mon-Sat & 2.0x Sun
Location: Gateshead
Job Type: Full-time, permanent
Working Hours: Day shift – 8:00am to 4:00pm

The Opportunity

A leading heavy engineering and manufacturing site in the North East is seeking an experienced Crane Maintenance Technician to join its Engineering & Maintenance function. The site operates a large number of overhead cranes supporting a high‑volume industrial environment and offers long-term stability within a permanent, days-based role.

The successful individual will be mechanically biased, safety focused, and capable of working independently while contributing effectively within a wider maintenance team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive breakdown repairs on overhead cranes and lifting equipment
  • Complete statutory inspections, tests, and routine maintenance activities
  • Maintain control of maintenance schedules, outstanding works, and asset reliability
  • Update and improve maintenance routines and schedules where required
  • Ensure all crane and lifting equipment records are accurate and fully compliant with current legislation
  • Communicate effectively with management, engineers, technicians, contractors, and production personnel
  • Access, update, raise, and sign off tasks via the site CMMS (Pirana)
  • Coordinate and oversee contractors to ensure work is completed safely, to standard, and at best value
  • Update stores and maintenance records during shifts
  • Support the training and development of other team members as required
  • Conduct plant checks, risk assessments, and handovers where necessary

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with LOLER, the Health & Safety at Work Act, and site SHE policies
  • Maintain safe, reliable operation of all lifting equipment
  • Adhere to internal standards, systems, and procedures at all times

Candidate Requirements

  • Time-served engineer with a recognised engineering qualification
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and manage priorities effectively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills across all levels
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and capable of working unsupervised
  • High attention to detail with a “can-do” approach
  • Competent IT skills, including basic Microsoft Office applications
  • Comfortable working at height
  • Flexible approach to overtime, including weekends when required

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Electrical maintenance experience
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience
  • Direct experience maintaining cranes and lifting equipment
  • LEEA Foundation Course completed
