Senior Embedded Software Engineer (JOB-5911)

A growing technology business specialising in the development of advanced electronic and communications systems is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join its multidisciplinary engineering team.

This is a hands-on role focused on the design, development and integration of embedded software for complex hardware platforms. Working across the full product lifecycle, you will help develop next-generation products used within highly demanding technical environments where performance, reliability and security are critical.

You will collaborate closely with hardware, FPGA, systems and software engineers, contributing to both new product development and the ongoing enhancement of existing platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain embedded software and firmware using Zephyr and bare-metal environments.
  • Develop embedded Linux solutions, including custom Linux distributions and BSPs.
  • Support hardware bring-up, integration and validation of new electronic platforms.
  • Design and maintain communications interfaces including CAN, SPI, I²C, UART and RS422.
  • Develop networking functionality, communication services and software APIs.
  • Implement and optimise TCP/IP and UDP-based communications.
  • Develop secure software architectures, including authentication, encryption and secure update mechanisms.
  • Investigate, diagnose and resolve complex software, networking and integration issues.
  • Develop embedded Linux services, middleware, device drivers and supporting software infrastructure.
  • Produce software requirements, interface specifications and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure successful product integration and delivery.
  • Contribute to software architecture reviews, code reviews and continuous improvement activities.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Software Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent commercial experience.
  • Strong commercial experience developing low-level embedded software and firmware.
  • Proven experience with Zephyr RTOS.
  • Strong C and C++ development skills.
  • Experience with hardware bring-up and hardware/software integration.
  • Ability to interpret electronic schematics and technical documentation.
  • Experience implementing digital communications protocols including CAN, SPI, I²C, UART and RS422.
  • Strong debugging and diagnostic skills using software tools and laboratory equipment.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and problem-solving abilities.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience with ARM Cortex-M and Cortex-A platforms.
  • Embedded Linux development experience, including Yocto or similar build systems.
  • Knowledge of Linux kernel architecture, bootloaders, device drivers and system services.
  • Experience with alternative RTOS and bare-metal development environments.
  • Understanding of networking and security protocols.
  • Experience with secure boot, encryption and secure firmware deployment.
  • Python development experience.
  • Familiarity with high-performance electronic systems.
  • Exposure to MISRA standards or structured software development methodologies.
  • Experience with automated testing, CI/CD environments and Linux-based automation.
  • Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Docker.
  • Practical experience supporting hardware debugging and system-level investigation.
  • Eligibility to obtain security clearance would be advantageous.

Why Apply?

  • Join a highly collaborative engineering environment where software, electronics and systems disciplines work closely together.
  • Contribute to challenging technical projects with real-world applications.
  • Work across the full development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping through to deployment and support.
  • Influence future product development and technical direction.
  • Gain exposure to a broad range of embedded technologies, operating systems and communications platforms.

This opportunity would suit an experienced Embedded Software Engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware, solving complex technical challenges and developing robust software for advanced electronic systems.
